Kate Rickard's love of textiles began at an early age, shaped by a childhood spent in a home steeped in craft. Surrounded by the creativity and quiet discipline of her mother—a textile designer and teacher—she grew up amongst threads, books and the familiar atmosphere of a working studio.
This early immersion led her to study textiles at Nottingham Trent University, where she specialised in surface design and embroidery. Following graduation, she moved into designing embroidery for the high street, alongside producing handmade evening bags stocked across London and Europe, including with brands such as Paul Smith and Erickson Beamon.
A later shift into commercial buying broadened her understanding of textiles within a global context. Through travel to Portugal, India and beyond, she gained insight into production techniques, material traditions and the wider structures that support the industry.
Today, her practice returns to its origins. Working primarily in freehand embroidery, Kate Rickard approaches stitch intuitively, creating textured surfaces that speak of memory, place and everyday life. For her, embroidery remains both a connection to the past and a quietly grounding creative practice in the present.
Event description
During this workshop, participants are invited to discover the quiet satisfaction of hand embroidery. Working with thoughtfully chosen block-printed cloths, the question of composition is gently set aside, allowing attention to rest on the rhythm of stitch and thread. Guided demonstrations will introduce a repertoire of techniques, alongside an exploration of colour and weight—how a fine cotton differs from a lustrous silk, how a subtle shift in tone can transform a surface.
A selection of samples, colour boards and finished pieces will be available, offering a tactile reference point as each participant develops their own response. The session is suitable for all levels, whether a first encounter with needle and thread or a return to a familiar practice.
Homemade cakes will be served, and the small group setting allows time for conversation, reflection and individual guidance. Those with specific dietary requirements are welcome to bring their own refreshments.
All materials provided, and all skill levels welcome. Materials include printed fabrics, threads, needles, hoops and small tools, along with a project bag to carry work home. Participants may select threads to continue their piece beyond the day.
