Description (story of the item): Made to Order:
1 Pair of Socks-Natural Latte, Fawn with Moorit accent , Hung Hemmed cuff.
These Shepherd's Socks are a rare piece of clothing, in that they are knitted on the farm where the wool is grown. They are made one at a time on an antique sock machine made about the time our old farm house was built, 1910. These machines produce socks with tiny even stitches that hold up very well. And the wool used is our Shetland Wool that is hand dyed and natural colored wool we lovingly raise. All of our sheep have names and live out their lives being tended to by the shepherd who knits the socks.
Fair Isle is a traditional knitting technique unique to the Shetland Islands where Shetland Sheep originates. It is a form of colorwork and requires hand manipulation when done on our antique knitting machine.
Each pair comes with a little bobbin of extra yarn, should the need for darning arise. These socks are truly old school tradition in that the wool was minimally processed to preserve the softness, durability and comfort of the natural wool. (Unlike super wash, which is scoured in heavy chemicals to remove the outer scales of the wool.) After a few times wearing and hand washing, laying the socks to dry, you should be able to wash in the machine in cold water, delicate cycle-and put on a towel to dry.
Materials: 80% Shetland Wool, 10% Nylon, 10% Merino Wool , with added strand of cobweb lycra.
