About Made by Afous
Made by Afous is a curated home for beautiful, authentic textiles and artisan-made wares, including vintage Berber rugs. Every object and textile featured by the brand carries a story—either a personal connection with the artisan or the historical context from which it originates. The founder is driven by a deep curiosity and admiration for other cultures, their craftsmanship, and the extraordinary people encountered along the way. Nature, too, plays a role in shaping this ongoing journey of discovery.
Sourcing the rugs and textiles is an intentionally slow and thoughtful process. Each piece is selected with care, chosen for its uniqueness, quality, and design. Emphasising vintage finds is both an aesthetic and ethical choice—celebrating what already exists rather than adding to production. Core values of authenticity and timeless style guide every decision. By crossing borders and collaborating with exceptional artisans, Made by Afous fosters a kind of creative alchemy. From these exchanges, a contemporary sensibility arises from traditional roots.
The name “Afous”, meaning “hand” in Berber, reflects the brand’s ethos. Hands symbolise humanity, collaboration, and craftsmanship—principles at the heart of its work. The founder’s collaborations in Morocco began primarily with the Berber community, who suggested the name.
The term “Berber” was originally coined by the Romans, but the people themselves identify as “Imazighen” (singular: Amazigh), meaning Free People or Noble Men. They are an indigenous ethnic group of North Africa, with communities across Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, northern Mali, Mauritania, northern Niger, and parts of western Egypt.
