About the We are KAL:
We are KAL grew from a desire to understand where textiles come from, and what is carried within them. The project brings together farmers, spinners, weavers, nomads, designers and knitters, all connected through the making of a single product. Each stage is valued, visible and respected, from raw fibre to finished garment.
Founded in 2013 after a long walk through the German woods, We are KAL took shape in a small rooftop apartment in New Delhi. Its early years were defined by research and listening. Founder Catherine travelled for nine months through Northeast India and the Himalayas, seeking home-based weavers working with natural fibres and traditional methods. Progress came slowly, through trial and error, until a committed group of makers began to form.
In Assam, women weave eri silk, a fibre known for its non-violent lifecycle, as the moth is allowed to emerge before spinning. In Ladakh, communities in the Changthang region contribute wool sourced from herds raised at high altitude. Some continue a nomadic way of life, others have settled near Leh, where wool is hand-spun and woven into textiles rooted in local tradition. All fabric is hand-made in the homes of the makers, while garments are stitched in small batches in Ladakh.
Natural fibres are used in their original state, without chemical intervention, allowing the qualities of the material and its place of origin to remain intact. Wool from Ladakh carries the character of its landscape; eri silk reflects generations of knowledge passed through families.
For We are KAL, craft is a form of self-expression and independence. In rural India, particularly for women, hand-making creates autonomy and strengthens cultural identity. By valuing these skills, the project supports continuity, ensuring that knowledge shaped over generations remains relevant and alive.
