About Angie Lewin
Angie Lewin studied BA (Hons) Fine Art Printmaking at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design between 1983 and 1986, followed by a year of part-time postgraduate printmaking at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts.
After working in London as an illustrator, she went on to study horticulture, and a move to Norfolk prompted a return to printmaking.
Inspired by the clifftops and salt marshes of the North Norfolk coast as well as the dramatic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, Lewin depicts these contrasting environments and their native flora through wood engraving, linocut, silkscreen, lithograph, and collage. Her landscapes are often viewed through intricately detailed plant forms.
Fascinated by the relationships between plant communities on an intimate scale, Lewin's work frequently captures even the finest natural details, such as insect eggs on a flower bud. Her still life's incorporate elements gathered on walking and sketching trips - seedpods, grasses, flints, and dried seaweed. A Wedgwood cup designed by Ravilious might contain a collection of feathers and seed heads.
Her prints illustrate Garden Wisdom, an anthology of garden writing published by Merrell, where author Leslie Geddes-Brown writes:
“The whole book was, in its turn, inspired by the art of Angie Lewin, who brings her own vision of the natural world to her work.
She sees the beauty in all seasons and all manifestations of plants: the ordered pattern of the blooms, the thrusting energy of the emerging buds, the prolific seed heads and the varieties of shapes, colours and habits to be found in meadow and border.”
Now living and working in Scotland, Lewin was the subject of a 2010 monograph published by Merrell, Angie Lewin – Plants and Places.
In addition to designing fabrics and stationery for St Jude’s, the company she runs with her husband Simon, she has undertaken commissions for Penguin, Faber, Conran Octopus, Merrell, and Picador, and has designed fabrics for Liberty.
Lewin was elected to The Royal Society of Painter Printmakers in 2006, The Society of Wood Engravers in 2008, The Art Workers Guild in 2010, and The Royal Watercolour Society in 2016.
