Margot Selby is a British textile artist celebrated for her mastery of colour and geometric form. Working on handlooms, she creates abstract woven artworks that explore repetition and transition, symmetry and asymmetry, and the balance between dynamic movement and structural stability. Colour is at the heart of her practice – from subtle tonal shifts to bold contrasts – and she is fascinated by the infinite possibilities of blending hues through woven thread.
Her work draws inspiration from architecture, graphic design, pattern, and scale, reflecting her ongoing dialogue between hand and machine, craft and technology. Trained at Chelsea College of Arts and the Royal College of Art, Margot has developed an expansive approach to textiles, bridging the worlds of art, design, and industry. In 2021, she was awarded the Turner Medal for Britain’s Greatest Colourist.
Painterly in their optical mixing of pure colour and sculptural in their construction, her works unite colour and structure in precise, layered compositions. Margot’s pieces are exhibited, commissioned, and collected worldwide, connecting to the modernist tradition of constructivist art while remaining firmly rooted in the discipline of weaving.
