Yiran Duan - Yi Crafts
Yi Crafts is a London-based cultural studio founded in 2019 by Yiran Duan, a Bai artist and designer from Dali, Yunnan. Raised in a family of traditional indigo dyers, Yiran’s practice is deeply rooted in the textile traditions of China’s ethnic minority communities. Through Yi Crafts, she works to preserve and share these endangered craft practices, bringing them into dialogue with contemporary life.
The studio collaborates directly with artisans across Southwestern China, particularly from Bai, Miao, Yi, and Dai communities, supporting traditional techniques such as indigo dyeing, batik, hand embroidery, bamboo weaving, and woodblock printing. Yi Crafts’ products are defined by their use of natural materials, slow processes, and cultural storytelling, offering an alternative to mass production.
At the Winter Fair, Yi Crafts will present a curated collection of indigo-dyed textiles, hand-printed woodblock works, embroidered accessories, bamboo craft, and DIY craft kits, each piece reflecting generations of knowledge and making. These works invite audiences not only to appreciate their beauty, but to understand the processes, people, and traditions behind them—positioning craft as both cultural heritage and a living, evolving practice.
