EKA: Stories Sewn in Stillness
You may have already seen our wonderful interview with Rina Singh, founder of Ekà, in Clothes for Poets (Issue 124, Rural). But did you know you could also be the lucky winner of a block-printed jacket from Ekà, as part of this issue’s prize draw? To tempt you to enter, here’s more about the world behind the brand…
In a leafy part of Delhi, beneath a soft green roof, there is a studio where time slows down. The light falls gently across wooden tables. There is laughter between tasks, the hush of cotton being cut, the rhythmic press of carved blocks into cloth. This is the home of Ekà.
Ekà was born from a desire to return to something familiar and true - the slow rhythm of Rina Singh’s rural childhood, the textures of handwoven cloth, the quiet dignity of craft. Her clothes don’t follow trends. They follow feeling, memory, and the slow seasons of a life well lived.
At the heart of the Ekà studio is a sense of togetherness. Pattern makers, tailors, block printers, and quality checkers work side by side - not as departments, but as people who know and trust each other. Every step of the process takes place under one roof: from developing fabric and hand-printing motifs, to final stitching, folding, and shipping. Waste is kept to a minimum, and the link between the hands that make and the hands that wear is never broken.
Each print begins with a hand-carved wooden block. The designs are drawn from India’s rich tradition of storytelling, yet used sparingly - a flicker at the hem, a quiet line at the collar. Production is kept intentionally small, resisting the pressure to create more than what’s needed.
Beyond the walls of the studio, Ekà stretches into homes and workshops across India. Generations of weavers, spinners, and dyers contribute to each collection. Many have worked with the brand for years. Their skills are not just valued - they are vital.
The name Ekà, meaning “one” in Sanskrit, reflects something simple: unity. Between maker and wearer. Between the old and the new. Between cloth and life.
Rina’s silhouettes are fluid, gentle. There is structure, but never stiffness. Ekà’s clothing moves easily - across bodies, across seasons - rooted in comfort, authenticity, and grace. These are not clothes for attention, but for alignment. And like stories, they are made to be returned to. Worn, worn again. Quietly cherished.
As Rina says, “The world of Ekà is imaginary - whimsical, poetic, and romantic. A canvas where stories come alive in hand-touched garments.”
Ekà’s pieces don’t demand to be noticed. They invite you in. They’re made to live in, to rest in, to grow with - light on the skin, gentle in spirit, made not for the moment, but for many moments to come.
