12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS: HERITAGE BY HAND
The Selvedge 12 Days of Christmas 2021 prize draws are open! From 1 – 12 December you can enter for a chance of winning one of our 12 prizes. Every day while entries are open we will look at each prize in more detail.
Heritage by Hand is a brand that promotes handmade products by master artisans with shapes, colors and textures inspired by the natural world. Founder Heidi McKinnon wants visitors to reconnect with the importance of the handmade in our lives. “My approach to the selection of our collection has evolved out of a deep respect for both culture and environment which developed over decades of work as a curator and advocate in collaboration with traditional communities throughout Latin America.”
Chile is a country dear to my heart, and our alpaca collection includes a minimal, tonal collection of handspun and handwoven alpaca from Alejandra Challapa and her cooperative of Aymara weavers in Arica, Chile. Alejandra has dedicated her entire life to traditional four-peg and pedal loom weaving. As she explains, “from a very early age, I was familiar with the art of weaving and the varieties of natural fibers because my parents were camelid, llama, and alpaca ranchers. My childhood was dedicated to caring for animals and learning the whole process of preparing fiber, including shearing and spinning, to be able to make our traditional fabrics on a four-peg loom.”
Alejandra’s collection for Heritage by Hand includes a range of twelve natural colors, woven into scarves, shawls, ruanas, and ponchos made under the arduous conditions of lockdown in Chile, when it was difficult to access alpaca wool from their family ranches in Andean altiplano. We're delighted that Heritage By Hand are giving a classic white alpaca ruana with stripes in tones of grey for our 12 Days of Christmas prize draw. "All natural. Butter soft. Made sustainably with care."
