12 Days of Christmas: Win a Farmhouse Broom by Rosa Harradine

12 Days of Christmas: Win a Farmhouse Broom by Rosa Harradine

December 2, 2025
Share

In the wooded quiet of West Wales, broom and brush maker Rosa Harradine shapes objects that restore beauty and intention to the rhythms of daily life. Working with natural materials and traditional techniques, she creates tools that are both functional and quietly sculptural, honouring the meditative, often overlooked act of sweeping.

Rosa’s path to broom making was anything but linear. Originally trained in music, studying clarinet, saxophone and piano, she later felt the unmistakable draw of working with her hands. That instinct led her through spoon carving, pole-lathe bowl turning, and basketry before broom and brush making captured her imagination fully. Five years on, it has become the craft in which she feels most at home.

Every broom and brush is made by Rosa herself, by hand. She works with sustainable fibres such as broomcorn, tampico and arenga, and harvests many of her broom handles from her own small patch of woodland — cutting, seasoning, carving or sanding each one before sealing it with linseed oil or leaving the bark intact for a rustic finish. Her making process is meticulous: measuring every piece of broomcorn with her trusted metre ruler, sorting bundles by size and quality, weaving and binding the fibres in multiple layers, rejecting any stalks not up to standard, stitching, trimming, and finally adding a cork or leather loop for hanging. As she says, “Brooms are a real labour of love,” a craft that allows her to move between woodland, workshop, carving block and stitching table in a rhythm that feels deeply connected to place.

Recognition has followed. Rosa was chosen as a TOAST New Maker in 2022, celebrated for her originality and craftsmanship, and this year she was named one of The King’s Foundation’s 35 Under 35 — a network of makers and changemakers working with nature, tradition and sustainability. Alongside her studio practice, she teaches broom and brush making workshops across the UK, with new sessions arriving in Carmarthenshire at Llangathen Temperance Hall in 2026. She also plants a tree for every broom sold — not through a distant scheme, but with her own hands, spade in the earth, on her small Welsh holding.

Today, we also share more from Rosa Harradine in our Five Minutes with a Friend interview series. Read on to find out more, but first, a little information about this prize:

12 Days of Christmas: Win a Farmhouse Broom by Rosa Harradine

As part of Selvedge’s 12 Days of Christmas celebrations, we are delighted to offer readers the chance to win a Farmhouse Broom by Rosa Harradine, worth £190.

Designed for virtually any hard floor — from wood and tile to lino, cork, vinyl and concrete — it balances firm bristles with soft, wispy ends that catch dust effortlessly. Each broom is handmade using traditional materials: broomcorn, beech, ash or oak wood, nylon binding and a cork hanging strap. The handle is hand-painted with eco-friendly paint, making every broom unique.

Rooted in tradition and rich with symbolism — often given as housewarming gifts or used in “jumping the broom” wedding ceremonies — this is a tool made to be used and admired in equal measure.

To enter, click on the button below, or visit the Selvedge Enter a Prize Draw page — and don’t miss the daily prize draws running from 1–12 December.

Winners will be announced on 13 December.

Five Minutes with a Friend: Rosa Harradine

Rosa, what is your first memory of a textile?

I have a soft fabric doll that I’ve had since I was born! Creatively named ‘Dolly,’ she was a constant companion throughout my childhood.

Can you put into words what you love about textiles?

I love to think about the process and the ingenuity of humans to turn plants into things that are both beautiful and useful!

Where did you learn your craft?

I am self-taught! I originally trained in music, playing clarinet, saxophone and piano. But I always felt the pull of making with my hands. I explored a range of crafts, including spoon carving, bowl turning on a traditional pole lathe, and basketry, but broom and brush making is the craft I felt most drawn to. I taught myself through books, online videos, and lots of trial and error!

Where is your most inspiring space or place to create?

I've got a workshop in my garden, which I feel so lucky to have. The same family owned my house for 90 years before I bought it in 2023. The grandfather of the family was a funeral director and cabinet maker, and my workshop was used for making coffins. It was in a sorry state, having not been used for years so it's been a big project bringing it back into use. I've replaced the rotten wooden floor, repainted the whole building, installed a woodburner and built some decking at the front, looking into my garden. It's now an airy, light filled space which is a joy to work in.

What has inspired you recently?

I’m feeling very inspired by Donna Wilson and her use of colour throughout her range. It’s all so bright and cheerful.

What is your most cherished textile, and why?

The aforementioned ‘Dolly’! When I was little, my gran used to make her new outfits out of old curtains and bedsheets, and I’d choose new buttons out of her button box. Truly one of a kind, and irreplaceable!

Which colours, textures or materials say “Christmas” to you?

For me, green and red are the absolute classic Christmas colours!

What textile traditions or handmade items make the festive season special for you?

I love to make a wreath each year and go out foraging in the forest for materials. I dry orange slices and add those too, and top it off with a lovely big bow.

Do you have a favourite Christmas decoration or textile you bring out every year?

My favourite decoration is a felt fox wearing a Santa hat that we hang on the tree each year. My boyfriend and I bought it the first Christmas after we moved into our house together, so it feels really special.

If you could spend Christmas anywhere in the world to discover festive textile traditions, where would it be?

I would love to go to Mexican and learn all about the traditional crafts there, as well as eating a lot of delicious Mexican food!
