Across Continents, Through Cloth: Selvedge’s New Artisan Shop
On 6 April, Selvedge will unveil an exciting new chapter in its story: the launch of the Artisan Goods shop, a carefully curated space dedicated to craftsmanship, heritage, and the material beauty of textiles. This new offering promises to bring readers and collectors closer to the makers themselves, through thoughtful pieces that carry not just skill, but meaning.
At its heart, this initiative is about connection. Selvedge has long championed the stories behind cloth—the hands that weave, stitch, and dye, and the traditions passed from one generation to the next. The Selvedge Artisan Goods shop extends that ethos, creating a platform where select makers can share their work with a wider audience while preserving the integrity of their craft.
Drawing on Selvedge’s global network, the shop will bring together artisans from across continents. From the intricate embroidery traditions of India to handwoven textiles in Argentina, and from contemporary weave artists in South Africa to heritage crafts in Ukraine, Turkey, and Lebanon, each piece reflects a distinct cultural landscape and a deeply personal practice.
This spirit is reflected in the imagery accompanying the preview of the launch: The Weavers, by Jo Fraser, captures more than likeness—it evokes a shared creative language among those who work with textiles. As Fraser describes, “I saw women who I felt were relating to and crafting textiles in the same way and with the same symbolic gravitas as I understood myself.” It is a sentiment that resonates deeply with Selvedge’s mission.
As anticipation builds, the artisan goods shop invites us to look more closely and to value the human touch in an increasingly fast-paced world. In the coming weeks, we will be sharing more, and offering a closer look here on Selvedge Online Stories into the worlds of our featured artisans.
And mark your calendars: the shop launches on 6 April!
