Calling All Quilt Researchers: The BQSG Wants to Hear from You
Are you fascinated by the history and development of British patchwork and quilting? Do you find yourself asking questions about forgotten techniques, rare dyes, or the origins of particular styles? Is there a single quilt — or even a whole quilting tradition — you’d love to research? Or are you more interested in exploring contemporary practice and the makers shaping quilting today?
If so, the British Quilt Study Group (BQSG) wants to hear from you. A special interest group of The Quilters’ Guild, the BQSG is now calling for research proposals for its 2026 annual seminar, held each September or October.

Every year, the seminar brings together researchers, makers, and textile historians to share discoveries about the art and evolution of British quilting. Papers presented at the event are later published in the group’s respected annual journal, Quilt Studies, which serves as a key resource for anyone passionate about quilt heritage and innovation.
To take part, simply submit a 500-word abstract outlining your research idea by 30th November 2025. Whether your focus is historical, technical, or contemporary, the BQSG’s Research Panel will offer guidance to help you shape and develop your proposal.

Recognising that research can involve extra costs, the BQSG also offers an annual bursary of up to £500 to support travel, accommodation, childcare, or reproduction fees, as well as attendance at the seminar itself.
Part of The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles, the BQSG is built on a spirit of learning, curiosity, and community. The Guild welcomes quilters of all levels and interests — from those preserving traditional patchwork methods to artists pushing the boundaries of textile art. As an educational charity, The Guild promotes quilting across the UK and works to safeguard its heritage while inspiring future generations of makers.

If you’re ready to uncover the hidden histories stitched into Britain’s quilts, or to record the living practice of today’s quilters, this is your opportunity to contribute to the story.
