Disco by by Vivian Suter at MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology
In one of the year’s most anticipated exhibitions, the MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology), Lisbon, Portugal will showcase over 500 works by Vivian Suter (b. 1949), including 163 pieces being exhibited for the first time. The Swiss-Argentine artist, renowned for her exploration of the relationship between painting and nature, will present her solo exhibition Disco, opening to the public on 30 October 2024.

For more than four decades, Suter has developed a monumental body of work in Panajachel, Guatemala, where she lives and works. Disco, named after her beloved dog, represents the culmination of these years of creative exploration. Suter’s surroundings in Guatemala are central to her artistic practice, profoundly shaping both her process and the resulting works.

Her abstract paintings, often marked by the forces of nature, reflect a deep connection to her environment. Suter works with acrylic, oil, and pigments mixed with fish glue, leaving her canvases outdoors for extended periods to absorb the elements. Rain, earth, wind, and even traces of local wildlife like leaves and paw prints become part of the canvas, transforming nature into an active collaborator in her art.
