Dyeing and Screen-Printing with Joanna Kinnersly-Taylor
Create your own fabrics with this intensive 5-day course, covering everything from design development and screen exposure to dyeing and screen-printing fabric, fixing and finishing.
Joanna Kinnersly-Taylor shares her expertise and love of print in her spacious, well-equipped studio in the vibrant city of Glasgow, and creates a friendly and supportive environment in which to fully explore ideas on cloth. Suitable for both beginners and those who have some knowledge, as well as for printers with a wider experience who want some concentrated time to explore new ideas.
Working with just three participants to ensure a high level of individual attention and plenty of print table space, participants will be encouraged to think creatively and be experimental in their approach.
On the first day you will develop design ideas and prepare artwork for exposure onto 3 silk-screens, followed by dyeing your own natural fabrics with reactive dyes on day 2. The remaining 3 days are devoted to printing where you will screen-print your designs onto the dyed backgrounds, experimenting with building up layers through the use of reactive and discharge print pastes in conjunction with stencils; devoré and flock can also be covered. All processes are thoroughly explained with supporting documentation provided. This is perhaps the only short textile printing course in the country where screens are processed photographically, resulting in work of a very high standard.
Joanna has over 25 years experience and is the author of ‘Dyeing and Screen-Printing on Textiles’ (pub. A&C Black). As she guides you through each stage, there is also an assistant on hand who will wash your screen and help with other tasks to maximise your printing time.
