FREDDIE MERCURY: A WORLD OF HIS OWN

FREDDIE MERCURY: A WORLD OF HIS OWN

September 4, 2023
Share
Since passing away in the early 1990s, Freddie Mercury‘s undeniable impact on music and fashion is still felt today. The Queen lead vocalist is recognised as one of the greatest artists in rock music history, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004.

Sotheby’s is paying tribute to Mercury’s outstanding legacy with an all-new exhibition titled ‘Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own.’ Opening this month, it will offer an insider look at Mercury’s public and private life, immersed in music and fashion history.

‘Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own’ will explore the rock star’s deep love for collection, ranging from musical instruments to personal paperwork, photographs, and more. The exhibition will give an exclusive look at Mercury’s on-stage wardrobe, handwritten ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ lyrics, and personally owned artwork by Salvador Dali.

Each of Sotheby’s 15 galleries will inspect different eras of Mercury’s life, replicating his home through revived bedroom, bar, and dining room displays.

Take a look inside Sotheby’s ‘Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own’ in the gallery above. The exhibition is open now and will close on September 5 followed by six auctions of Mercury’s personal items.

I am a 74 year old artist/designer who featured in an early edition of Selvedge for my Handmade Wallpaper. in the 1980s and 1990s I had a small business to supplement my painting which was hand painting men’s ties, bowties and waistcoats. We sold in Harrods, Selfridges, Paul Smith, Saks, Bergdorfs, Neiman Marcus, Yoshi Yamamoto – in fact all around the world. I employed over 25 Artists to paint these wearable art pieces (no two alike), and 5 in the office. We sold to doctors, architects, actors, writers, princes, newsreaders, Queen Mothers, musicians including Freddy Mercury and Brian May. One of the waistcoats we made sold in last week’s sale for £110,000. Thanks god for the Artists’ Resale Rights Commission!
