Keeping Cosy
Guest post by Ruby Wilson
It is undeniable that during the winter months our homes become more welcoming. Acting as protection from the ever-worsening elements, the house becomes a sanctuary for warmth and relaxation. 'Hygge' is a Norwegian and Danish word that describes this quality of cosiness, which has recently become a defining characteristic of Danish culture. It originates from the Norwegian word for wellbeing, although it is speculated that it could have derived from the word ‘hug’ as well. It is a word associated with the Old Norse term ‘hygga’ which literally translated means 'to comfort’.
So as our homes become increasingly Hygge-esque, we turn to the work of Eleanor Pritchard who is fusing this Scandinavian school of thought with British design. Every one of Pritchard’s woven blankets is characterised with her signature style of bold geometrics and reversible patterns. Typically the colour-way combines chalky neutrals with sharp accents and deeper, inkier tones. As described by Pritchard, 'the aesthetic is clean and contemporary, with a nod to English mid-century design.'
The blankets are all created in the company's London based studio, where every part of the design and sampling is carried out. The collections begin with a storyboard and then the pattern, texture and colour is all developed using high quality yarns. Pritchard explains; 'I feel a strong affinity for the aesthetics and design philosophy of this era. Alongside this runs a deep interest in vernacular British textiles and I see much of my work as a re-interpretation of these traditions and techniques for a contemporary audience.'
Highly skilled British weavers weave all of the blankets in the United Kingdom. The company greatly values the expertise and history associated with the mills on which their products are made, believing it gives the fabrics a sense of ‘integrity and place’. The Scandinavian concept of Hygge is intrinsically linked to blankets. A sense of coziness, wellbeing and protection is certain to be found wrapped up in one of Pritchard’s creations.
