Olympic Fashion: Team Mongolia's standout uniform
Team Mongolia’s uniforms for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games have captivated the internet with their elaborate designs inspired by traditional Mongolian clothing, the Deel. The creative minds behind these intricate uniforms are sisters Michel and Amazonka Choigaalaa, founders of the fashion company MICHELAMAZONKA. Based in Ulaanbaatar, the designers introduced two sets of uniforms: one for the flag bearers and another for the athletes. Each uniform set took an average of 20 hours to complete, involving six stages of craftsmanship, and the entire design process spanned three months.
For the flag bearers, Michel and Amazonka modernised the Deel into a modest and clean-looking long garment, allowing the ornate, gold-thread-stitched collar to stand out. The athletes’ uniforms feature separate tops and bottoms—trousers for men and skirts for women. The standout pieces are the vests, adorned in Mongolia’s national colours: blue, red, and white. Gold thread stitching ties the uniforms to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with the Olympic torch symbolically placed at the centre, surrounded by mountains and landscapes that evoke Mongolia’s topography.
