Quilting Reinterpreted: Marion Elliot’s Cut-Paper Tribute
Quilts have long carried stories within their stitches. Pieced together from fragments of worn clothing, saved fabric scraps, and treasured remnants, traditional patchwork quilts are as much records of lived experience as they are practical objects. It is precisely this layered history that inspired Quilting, a remarkable cut-paper collage by Marion Elliot that Selvedge is delighted to offer as a prize as part of our current issue.

Quilting transforms the familiar language of patchwork into paper. “I love traditional patchwork quilts,” says Elliot, “particularly those created from scraps of old clothing, as they are mementoes of life as well as useful objects.” In this work she explores the rhythmic beauty of repeating geometric forms, building a richly tessellated composition that echoes the visual harmony of a carefully pieced quilt.

Yet, like the textile traditions that inspire it, the artwork is also deeply personal. Each element of Elliot’s collage is cut meticulously by hand with embroidery scissors, rather than a craft knife. The process is slow and deliberate, allowing the artist to arrange and rearrange pieces until the composition settles into balance. Elliot describes collage as a contemplative practice, “rather like making a large jigsaw puzzle,” where hours can be spent quietly shifting shapes and patterns.

Paper itself is central to Elliot’s practice. An avid accumulator of ephemera, she gathers old printed materials alongside flea-market discoveries, vintage textiles and books, all of which fill the shelves and drawers of her home and studio in Ludlow. From this ever-growing archive she draws inspiration, often transforming fragments of paper into richly textured surfaces using a range of printmaking techniques. These papers become the raw material for her collages, forming scenes that feel both nostalgic and vibrantly alive. Through them, Elliot celebrates the visual language of British vernacular culture — from shop fronts and fairgrounds to canal boats, trade banners and the artistry of everyday craft traditions.

Elliot’s own creative journey has been similarly rich. After studying fine art at Liverpool College of Art and completing a postgraduate diploma at the Sir John Cass School of Art and Design, she built a career as a writer, stylist and art director for major publishing houses. Over the years she has authored 25 books on design and exhibited internationally in the UK, USA and Japan. Today she balances her studio practice with teaching on the BA Illustration course at Hereford College of Arts.
In Quilting, these many threads come together. It is both homage and reinvention: a celebration of the humble patchwork quilt and the enduring beauty found in repetition, pattern, and patient handwork.
