Selvedge Fair: The Stitch Society
This March, Selvedge is hosting one our popular artisan fairs in the beautiful city of Bath. Over fifty curated exhibitors will be selling a range of rare vintage fabrics, covetable haberdashery and skilfully handmade textile treasures. The fair offers the perfect opportunity to meet makers, catch up with old friends and pick up that special something. Today, Jessica Edney speaks to Charlotte from Yorkshire-based apron company, The Stitch Society, who will be exhibiting at the fair.
How did The Stitch Society come about?
The Stitch Society was launched three years ago when I was teaching knitting and sewing and couldn’t find an apron that had a big enough pocket for all my bits and bobs, so I designed an apron with a pocket big enough for the knitting needles and had so many requests for a similar apron that we made a few for a show, sold them and have kept on making them ever since, developing the designs as we have grown.
How do you source your fabrics?
We source all our fabrics in the UK through a variety of sources built up over the years. There are some amazing textile manufacturers in the UK and we try wherever possible to source everything for our workwear in the UK. We are working with a number of mills to source all our fabrics from UK manufacturers and all our aprons are designed and made in Yorkshire. We know which fabrics work for our designs and always look for quality and durability for our customers.
What will you be exhibiting at Bath?
We will be exhibiting our artisan workwear aprons and showcasing our bestsellers such as Susie and Grace in our durable denim, stripes and linens. We will also be bringing some aprons in new fabrics and colours as well as our new range of bags which are made from the remnants of the apron making.
What is the best thing about Yorkshire?
So many … I’m originally from Bristol but have been up here for over 30 years now having come up to study at Huddersfield and I love the bleak moors for inspiration, the heritage of the textile industry which originally drew me up here and the industrial buildings that have stood the test of time. There is a respect for quality, hard graft and craftsmanship here which has been the perfect environment for our artisan aprons.
