Surface Reflections: London Design Biennale 2025
This month, Somerset House will once again come alive with creativity as the London Design Biennale returns from 5–29 June 2025. Now in its fifth edition, this global celebration of design brings together over 40 designers and change-makers from around the world, offering visitors an inspiring journey through the latest ideas and innovations shaping our future. Particularly within the realm of textiles.
Under the creative direction of Dr Samuel Ross MBE - renowned for his cutting-edge design work with A-COLD-WALL* and SR_A - the Biennale invites participants to reflect on the theme “Surface Reflections”. This thought-provoking concept encourages us to consider how our inner worlds and external influences shape the way we see and interact with the world around us.

For textile enthusiasts, several pavilions promise to be highlights. Argentina’s immersive installation draws on the vibrant cultural legacy of the Andes, weaving together light and textiles to bring ancestral narratives to life. Peru’s pavilion is equally compelling, celebrating the traditional craft of Andean women who create intricate wigs from their own hair, a powerful testament to resilience and economic independence. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan’s showcase delves into the rich traditions of the lost gardens of Samarkand, where craft and contemporary design intertwine beautifully.

Elsewhere, visitors can explore Japan’s bold experimentation with Washi paper, blending material, music, and costume design with live performances. Nigeria’s pavilion will challenge notions of African identity through textile traditions rooted in the Lejja community, while Malta’s striking limestone installation reimagines memorial practices with a focus on material and ritual.

For those eager to explore innovation and cutting-edge design, the returning Eureka pavilions spotlight pioneering research projects, including collaborations from Northumbria University, UCL, and VCUarts Qatar.
Don’t miss the chance to experience this world-class design event. Whether you’re a design professional or a curious visitor, the London Design Biennale is the perfect place to reflect, connect, and be inspired.
