TADEK BEUTLICH
This March, Tadek Beutlich’s prints will be on public display for the first time since his death in 2011. In an exhibition titled “Tadek Beutlich Prints and Textiles”, the work of the Polish-born artist, weaver and tapestry maker will be available to purchase at the Jointure Studios in Ditchling. Curated by Emma Mason and in partnership Liz Hankins who manages the Beutlich archives, this show will shed light on Beutlich’s printmaking which was, at times, shadowed by his better-known weaving work.
A lot of Beutlich’s famous textiles were in fact inspired by these prints, which are displayed alongside his woven tapestries for the exhibition. By placing these two mediums in such close proximity to each other, this show opens up a conversation between the two art forms, asking where Beutlich’s inspiration came from and how it influenced these very different ways of making. This show also compliments the "Tadek Beutlich: Beyond Craft " exhibition, currently on at the Ditchling Museum.
During the 1960s his practice took an experimental turn when he began incorporating charred wood, seedpods and X-ray film into his weaving. Many consider Beutlich to have been a pioneer in this respect, which was enough to have his work recognized in the seminal 1956 V&A exhibition “Weaving for Walls: Modern British Wall Hangings and Rugs”. Soon afterwards, he published his book “The Technique of Woven Tapestry”, which further cemented his position as a leading textile artist.
Printing without a press, many of his prints were made for Editions Alecto publishers, and often feature bold colours and shapes, many of which formed abstract reflections of the natural world. Beutlich lived for many years in Ditchling before moving to Spain and then finally settling in Kent. It’s quite fitting then that this show is being held in Ditchling, a location that may well be as revealing as the exhibition.
“Tadek Beutlich Prints and Textiles” will be on show at The Jointure Studios, 11 South Street, Ditching, Sussex BN6 8UQ.
Friday 3rd March - Sunday 12th March. Open daily 11-5pm (11-4pm on Sundays).
