The Maker's Atelier at Selvedge Spring Fair
Frances Tobin trained and practised as a fashion and textiles designer before setting up 'The Maker's Atelier'. As someone who is not only trained in fashion but still makes many of her own clothes from scratch, the premise behind The Maker's Atelier seems like an extremely organic and worthwhile progression: somewhere you can buy well thought out patterns for clothes that you really want to wear.
This might seem simple enough, but in fact it can be incredibly difficult to find a readable pattern for anything that will a) fit well and b) be both fashionable and versatile enough to leave room for your own creative input. Tobin can cut clothes and understands fit, but furthermore, as she also works in trend forecasting (her main focus being on colour) she realises more beyond the basics of pattern cutting and making and The Maker's Atelier offers suggestions for different fabrics for the same pattern.
Beyond providing desirable patterns, the Maker's Atelier also offers a range of experiences. From their atelier in Brighton, there is a range of courses on offer at both beginner and intermediate levels. With a maximum of four on every course, students learn a huge amount, from fabric knowledge to how to make a professional looking garment. Taster lessons are also on offer so you can get a feel for the school before committing.
The Maker's Atelier will have a stall at our London Spring Fair.
