The Modern Natural Dyer
'It really makes one feel rather god-like turning things another colour'
Although that quotation (from the glamorous stepmother to Cassandra Mortmain in Dodie Smith's I capture the Castle) may not be completely accurate, it has in some form or another stayed with me – because it is true.
Even with just a packet of washing machine Dylon powder, the magic of transforming something dull into something vibrant and truly your own is marvellous. But understanding the process, ingredients and even history of dyeing is something else entirely.
The Modern Natural Dyer by the modern natural dyer Kristine Vejar, simultaneously manages to both demystify the 'magic' as well invigorate and inspire any dyer to know, try and expertly execute more.
According to Vejar there are thousands of natural materials able to produce glorious colours – over 500 species of plants produce blue indigo – this book offers a wonderful introduction to them.
