The William Morris Gallery
We would like to highlight and thank the hidden gem that is The William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow. They generously hosted our launch party for Issue 64 and the setting couldn't have been better.
We loved meeting our readers and contributors and our thanks also go to Rezia Wahid who demonstrated her beautiful weaving. We hope you all enjoyed the evening.
This Georgian house, William Morris' family home from 1848 to 1856, is set in serene gardens in North-East London and is home to a stunning collection of over 10,000 objects including textiles, wallpapers, furniture and stained glass. The displays provide an insight into Morris' life - as not just a designer and craftsman, but as a poet, retailer and political activist. In addition to this, the gallery also accommodates an array of Arts and Crafts objects, including works by Walter Crane, May Morris and the artist Frank Brangwyn who worked under William Morris in his youth.
The gallery is currently showing an exhibition by Turner Prize Nominee, Yinka Shonibare MBE. Working with Waltham Forest residents he has recreated photographs of the Morris family from the Gallery's collection. Shonibare's carefully constructed images and Victorian costumes in 'African' batik fabric encourage viewers to reflect on the realities of equality in both Morris's time and our own.
The William Morris Gallery is open Wed - Sun 10am - 5pm
Address: Lloyd Park, Forest Road, Walthamstow, London, E17 4PP
Yinka Shonibare's work is on display until 7th June 2015
