Threadology: The Khadi, the Rug and the Label It Started

Threadology: The Khadi, the Rug and the Label It Started

In 2016, Manali Shah sat at a desk somewhere between a café and a makeshift home studio, surrounded by different shades of green through the window, researching crafts, colour, and questions she couldn't stop asking. She had left a job, spent her savings, and was beginning something she couldn't yet fully name. That something became Threadology.

The turning point, as Shah tells it, came not in a design studio but in the aisles of a handicrafts shop in a small town in Gujarat. A vintage hand-crafted rug caught her eye, and the idea arrived fully formed: what if the patterns of such an object could become the bones of a jacket? The question planted the seed for a label that has since grown into one of India's most considered slow fashion voices, rooted in the skills of traditional weavers and craftsmen across the subcontinent.

Shah, who holds a Bachelor's in Design, has long been a collector of handmade pieces and memories from her travels. Her process begins late at night, with research that spills into morning, circling back repeatedly to the same obsessions: craft, colour, technique. The fabrics she favours reflect this intimacy with making. Handwoven khadis from Gujarat, jamdani-woven cottons from West Bengal, handspun fibres and organic materials that carry the mark of the hands that made them.

The Lotus collection, featured in Selvedge Issue 131, demonstrates this sensibility at its most distilled. The collection was sparked by a visit to a lotus forest in Kumarakom, on the backwaters of Kerala. "The lotus forest really touched me," Shah has said, "the fact that it is a bud in the night and then blooms in the day. It's growing in muddy waters, yet its colour reflects such a pungent range of pinks." The resulting garments translate this encounter into long, billowing dresses with knife pleats and soft gathers that recall the unfolding of petals, with rippled surface details evoking the movement of water beneath. Cut in lily, fuchsia, and poppy, they are as much about the landscape that inspired them as they are about cloth.

Threadology garments are designed to be worn forwards or backwards, layered over and under other pieces. This is not a gimmick but a philosophy: that clothing should accrue meaning and use over time, adapting to the wearer's life rather than demanding the reverse.

Shah's proposition is a simple one, and all the more powerful for it. Build your wardrobe the way you build a life: slowly, with intention, and only from things that mean something.
