Threads through Creation
Devon artist Jacqui Parkinson has delved into the first few pages of the book of Genesis from the Old Testament to inspire her current textile installation ‘Threads through Creation’. Twelve huge panels retell the story of creation through applique, frayed work, embroidery and quilting. It is one of the largest textile art projects by a single artist in the world.
Whether you believe in a metaphorical or literal created universe, or not, the story of how the world came into being is mysterious and awe-inspiring. Jacqui hopes that people will view her art with an open mind; we are invited to question and respond to the subject, and consider ourselves within the narrative.
Jacqui came to stitching by taking a degree in Embroidered Textiles after raising her two boys. Her love of fabric, she says, is inherited from her mother who was a seamstress. Jacqui’s illustrative style has been influenced by her father who was a bricklayer. There is order and control within the frameworks she applies to her designs. It’s a clever, deliberate device which helps control the explosions of colour, imagery and pattern.
The installation is currently touring UK cathedrals and comes to Leominster Priory, Herefordshire, on 5 June to 18 July 2024. With free entry every day from 10:00 – 16:00 BST* it’s an opportunity not to be missed.
Priory Arts, on behalf of Leominster Priory, have curated an arts-based festival around the Threads through Creation exhibition. Their exciting programme of creation-themed events has come about through collaboration with local institutions, community groups and schools. Concerts, workshops, nature talks and walks are on offer, and many are free including a special day of stitching and weaving activities – ‘The Big Stitch Up’ - on Saturday 15 June.
Event and ticket information can be found at www.prioryarts.org.uk
*Leominster Priory is a working church and some special services may be scheduled at short notice.
