India, Siju Shamji Vishram, Addhita Throw - Indigo/Natural
The throw is inspired by a traditional shoulder shawl that used to be made for Ahir community men by our elders. This used to be woven in 3 parts (as the loom widths were narrow in the earlier days) and joined with hand-stitches by women to make it broad enough to be a shoulder wrap.
Made in our village on a Traditional 4 shaft Pitloom. It is a contemporary variation of our traditional designs in new materials and product forms.
It is special because of the solid blue coloured weft-faced borders on both sides, which require a high level of skill in weaving. I have added the pinnacle design motifs used by the Meghwal Weavers of Kutch to make blanket shawls for the Rabari Community for whom we have been making shawls for more than 800 years.
Later wider looms were introduced and all type of shawls started getting woven in single pcs. I have recreated the tradition to create an interesting throw.
