Behind the Seams: Clothing and Textiles on Nantucket

Nantucket, a small island off the Massachusetts coast, hosted a lively summer calendar of fetes, fairs, and fundraisers during the 20th century. Austin Strong and his wife, Mary Strong, were active summer residents involved in local events and organised the first summer fete in 1921. Mary Strong’s mother, Mary Augusta Wilson, brought her own creative skills to the community with this design for an official town flag featuring a whale at the centre – a motif still used to represent the island’s whaling past. The flag is currently on display at the Nantucket Historical Association.
