Margo Selby is one of Britain's leading textile artists and designers, internationally recognised for her pioneering work in woven textiles. Working at the intersection of art, craft and design, she creates striking handwoven works defined by their precise geometric structures and sophisticated use of colour. Alongside her artistic practice, Margo leads Margo Selby Studio, designing woven textiles for interiors, fashion and industry, with applications ranging from upholstery and rugs to scarves and soft furnishings.
Colour lies at the heart of Margo's practice. Her work explores the complex relationships between coloured threads, woven structures and optical perception, drawing inspiration from architecture, graphic design and typography. While her approach is highly experimental, it is underpinned by the technical precision of weaving, a discipline she continues to champion through both handcraft and industrial production. In 2021 she was awarded the prestigious Turner Medal by the Colour Group (Great Britain), recognising her outstanding contribution to the understanding and creative use of colour.
Event Description
Join acclaimed textile artist Margo Selby for an exclusive introduction to Moon Landing, her monumental woven artwork exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery as part of The Sun and the Moon: Art Inspired by the Celestial.
Beginning in front of the installation itself, Margo will discuss the creative process behind the commission, revealing how colour, structure and weaving techniques combine to create the work, and how she responded to an original musical composition by composer Helen Caddick during its development.
The talk will also explore Margo's long-standing philosophy of Art Into Industry, demonstrating how ideas developed through large-scale handwoven artworks are translated into commercially produced textiles. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover examples of these designs, including pieces available through the gallery shop, illustrating the dialogue between unique artistic practice and contemporary textile production.
Following the talk, Margo will highlight several other textile works featured throughout the exhibition before guests are invited to continue exploring the galleries at their own pace, discovering the wider exhibition through the lens of textile innovation, colour and material experimentation.
