As twilight falls over Walthamstow, step inside the William Morris Gallery - the only public gallery devoted to the life and legacy of designer, craftsman, and radical socialist William Morris. Housed in the Grade II* listed Georgian house that was once his family home, the gallery is a living tribute to one of Britain’s most influential creative thinkers, home to the world’s largest collection of his work and a dynamic programme of exhibitions and events.
This special evening invites artists, makers and curious minds to gather for a spirited conversation exploring how Morris’s radical beliefs - in the value of beauty, the dignity of labour, and the importance of nature - still speak powerfully to our times. Together, we’ll reflect on how his ideas have survived and evolved in an era of mass consumerism, and how his distinctive designs have become, paradoxically, mainstream.
Once the dream of a man who believed art should be for everyone, Morris’s botanical patterns now flourish on biscuit tins, trainers, submarines and beyond. The evening will delve into this unexpected cultural journey, featuring curiosities such as a rose-patterned seat from a British nuclear submarine, Morris-style Nike trainers, and even a waving cat from Japan clad in leafy print. Visitors have contributed their own finds too - from embroidered wedding jackets to chopsticks - forming a vibrant, growing archive that charts Morris’s ongoing presence in everyday life.
The event is part of Morris Mania, a joyful and thought-provoking programme marking the 75th anniversary of the William Morris Gallery. Since opening in April and running through to September 2025, the exhibition has captivated audiences with its celebration of the artist’s enduring, and at times contradictory, cultural afterlife.
Details of speakers to be announced soon - expect lively discussion, unexpected objects, and a fresh look at one of Britain’s most enduring creative forces.
