Begin with a single fold. Each crease, each stitch transforms flat fabric into architectural wonders, reminiscent of paper origami - yet rendered in soft textiles that ripple with light and shadow.
In this workshop, Kristine Berg, a textile artisan with 50 years of experience in theatre, film, and costume, will guide you through the precise, meditative practice of origami fabric manipulation. With a ruler, needle, and thread, you will follow measured pathways to transform fabric into sculptural forms that echo landforms, waves, and basketry, all arising from patient folds and carefully placed stitches.
You’ll start by creating grids with confidence and precision, learning to interpret design charts to stitch two unique pattern options. Along the way, you’ll experiment with different fabrics - either ones you bring from home or materials provided in the workshop. Kristine’s extensive background in millinery, felting, metalwork, and fabric art infuses the workshop with insights into the art of transformation, where a fold becomes a soft peak, and a stitch gives rise to breath-taking texture.
To inspire your exploration, Kristine will share a visual journey through past and contemporary applications of this textile origami technique, sparking ideas for how it can expand your textile practice or garment designs.
This is an opportunity to embrace the clarity and calm of precise folds, where lines, stitches, and textures converge into forms that are both structured and poetic, elegant and bold. Each stitch is an act of transformation, each fold a new perspective, revealing the endless possibilities that lie within a simple piece of fabric.
Materials provided: A selection of fabrics and threads.
Materials to bring: A ruler, a sharp needle with a large eye, and a pair of scissors.
All skill levels are welcome. You will leave with two fabric origami samples, a strong foundation in folding and stitching techniques, and the skills to continue exploring this sculptural textile practice on your own.
