Until 7 September 2026: State Fairs - Growing American Craft
Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.
At the turn of the 20th century in Penacook, New Hampshire, seamstress Margaret J. Gilman, like many women in rural America, turned to sewing as a means of earning an income beyond the farm. Refusing to let a single scrap go to waste, she transformed the waste fabric from the clothing she made into patchwork quilts. Her artistry has been recognised, and a quilt is now on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery. Composed of irregular silk offcuts and elaborate embroidery of vines, feathers, and berries, the quilt earned Gilman second prize at the 1903 Concord State Fair.
