About Janome:
For over a century, Janome has been at the forefront of sewing innovation, redefining the boundaries of craftsmanship and creativity. Founded in Japan in 1921, the company takes its name from the Japanese word Janome (meaning “eye of the snake”), inspired by founder Yosaku Ose’s revolutionary round metal bobbin system — a design that replaced the traditional long shuttle and changed sewing forever.
Janome’s story, however, begins even earlier. Its roots trace back to 1860, when William Barker and Andrew J. Clark established the New England Single Thread Hand Sewing Machine company in Massachusetts. Their rebranded New Home sewing machines became household staples across America, and in 1960, the New Home brand was acquired by Janome of Tokyo, uniting two pioneers in the art of sewing.
Since then, Janome has continued to lead the way in precision engineering and design. In 1979, the company introduced the world’s first programmable, computerised sewing machine (the Memory 7), and remains a global leader with offices and partners across the world. Janome stands as a symbol of innovation, quality, and creative freedom, empowering makers everywhere to bring their ideas to life, one stitch at a time.
