Join us for a Selvedge Online Event this February
Have you ever wondered how one of your favourite textiles was made? Or been keen to hear about the creative working day of an artisan? If so, you will be happy to know that Selvedge regularly offers opportunities to learn a new skill alongside a talented craftsperson, or to meet a maker whose work you may admire.
This February, Selvedge invites you to join us for two exceptional online events with talented embroidery artists:
Saturday 15 February 2025: Meet the Maker – Gabriela Martinez
This exclusive online conversation with textile artist and designer Gabriela Martínez Ortiz - the creative force behind Ofelia & Antelmo - explores her diverse methods of hand embroidery as a visual graphic language. Talk, discuss, and enjoy an interactive Q&A session about her practice, in which she draws on the therapeutic aspects of hand embroidery and its role in memory preservation. Martinez experiments meticulously with embroidery on diverse surfaces, including paper, palm leaves, ceramics, and dried natural materials.
Gabriela's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across Mexico, Brazil, France, Hong Kong, the United States, Chile, and South Africa. Since 2019, she started teaching embroidery workshops online and in-person, reaching audiences in Mexico, the United States, the UK, Spain, France, Colombia, and Chile. This is your chance to gain an exclusive insight into Gabriela’s artistic journey and creative techniques, and engage with a globally celebrated textile artist in an intimate setting.
Sunday 16 February 2025: Kabeliya Embroidery with Vamika
Observe and engage in the vibrant cultural landscape of Rajasthan with an exclusive embroidery workshop led by Juhi Sharma, founder of Vamika. Dedicated to revitalising neglected craft skills among the Kabeliya community, Vamika preserves and celebrates a unique embroidery tradition. Participants will delve into the rich cultural heritage of the Kabeliya community, also known as the Snake Charmers, renowned for their unique embroidery techniques.
In this hands-on workshop, suitable for both beginners and the experienced sewer alike, artisans from the Kabeliya community will guide participants through the intricate stitches and techniques that define this endangered craft. And while you stitch away, listen closely as skilled artisans impart knowledge about the wondrous cultural and historic significance of Kabeliya embroidery.
To support you in your making and learning experience, a material pack will be sent to participants before the workshop containing fabric, embroidery threads, needles, mirrors, a ruler, small cotton fabric, and an instruction booklet.
Secure your spot, and join this unique journey into craftsmanship, creativity, and community.
